February 2022 Newsletter (#8)

Hi skier families,

A fun little video from our Shredders group this past Saturday: Shredders in the sun

General Programming update:

February finally. Sunshine and fresh snow! This past weekend was a fantastic training weekend and great skiing. The global focus was on leveling our shoulders and creating that crucial outside ski pressure that creates a clean carve. Carving is one of the most enjoyable sensations that we skiers experience. This leads me to take a moment and express my philosophy on ski racing:Ski racing is skiing at our own personal best. Ski race training goes straight to the essence of skiing performance. The timing on a race course is a completely unbiased “judge” of great skiing. Becoming a better skier allows us to experience skiing at a deeper and more enjoyable level. That is ski racing!
You do not have to be “competitive” to ski race at a high level, however you do have to be willing to work hard and continue to grow your skills.

Events:

Our  U16’s have just returned from 4 days of racing at Silverstar! This was their first Provincial wide ski race since March of 2020!

I will not add a list of results here as this is not what the Whitewater Ski Team is about. The athletes all had ups and down over the 4 days and managed the pressure of performing with the best in BC. And they met new friends and had a great time!

Our U14’s are off to Fernie for 3 days of racing this week!

Current activities:

The Winter Olympics are happening right now! With the time change the events are LIVE from 5:00-midnight which means that I am glued to the couch in the evening. CBC online player is doing an amazing job with all of the sports including your sport of Alpine Ski Racing. Mens Super-G tonight!

Annette is organizing a new club event “Shredders Olympics” that is a great way to introduce all of our athletes to fun competition. We are in our second season of not travelling to races for the Under 10 age groups so this will be the first of 2 club races! Sunday Feb 20th!

Behind the scenes:

Your coaches are doing some mid week professional development this week! Setting courses and doing some training of their own!
