Hi ski race families!
So maybe you were watching the resort webcam the past few days and were equally bummed to see the snow melt and turn into a murky brown torrent? If not, then sorry for oversharing 🙂
As you can see from the photo below the resort is white again and the base is building. The new opening date is Friday Dec 15th and it looks promising.
This tough start to the season reminds me of how great it is to be a ski racer. Our team learns how to ski in all conditions and learns to love some of the most icy and sloppy conditions that Mother Nature throws at us. This might be one of those years and we are up for the challenge. Ski racers learn to love ice as it makes training and racing in the course environment extra challenging for edging but also very fair for all athletes as there are no ruts that we get with soft conditions. Midseason rain is celebrated by whacky coaches like me because it soaks into the soft snow and freezes into a sloped skating rink that becomes a perfect training environment that rewards good technique and edging skills not to mention ski tuning skills. This makes me very stoked.
For our ski racers this will be a great ski season regardless of what Mother Nature throws our way!

Panorama preseason camp Update:
We are just back from our preseason training camp at Panorama Resort in the East Kootenays. This was attended by all of our 13 U14’s and 7 of our U16’s totalling 20 athletes and 4 coaches and 3 chaperones.
Early season training is a regular part of ski racing at the U14 and up age groups. We travel to a resort that is open to teams and we are given a “lane” to train on. These training centers have snow making so that there always November training available. The snow is always hard which is the surface that we look for in order to build the fundamentals of carving that is the foundation of ski racing.
We had the best conditions and hill space that we have ever had for early season training. We were able to ski more than the elevation of Everest each day for 4 days straight for the U14’s and 6 days for the U16’s.
This camp is a great team building opportunity and the kids really connected by living together, cooking together, eating together and skiing together for days on end.
Coaches create an inclusive and supportive learning environment that is the foundation for building great friendships and for building great skill progression.
There was also some very fun goofing around with our annual costume relay race!
Our next camp is a GS training camp at Kimberley Dec 18/19.
See you on the slopes,
